About the Luminous Lagoon

One of the world's brightest bioluminescent bays, right on Jamaica's north coast

What Makes It Glow?

The Luminous Lagoon sits where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea in Falmouth, Trelawny Parish. This unique mix of fresh and salt water creates the perfect habitat for millions of microscopic dinoflagellates โ€” organisms that flash brilliant blue light when the water is disturbed. Every movement of a boat, fish, or swimmer creates trails of magical light.

Why Is It Special?

Bioluminescent bays exist in only a handful of places worldwide, and the Luminous Lagoon is considered one of the largest and brightest. Unlike some bioluminescent bays where swimming is restricted, here you can jump in and swim through the glowing water โ€” an experience you won't find anywhere else in Jamaica.

Expert Tips for Your Visit

Make the most of your Luminous Lagoon experience with these insider tips from frequent visitors.

๐ŸŒ‘

Book During a New Moon

The single most important tip! Check our moon calendar above. The bioluminescence is dramatically brighter when the sky is darkest. Avoid full moon nights entirely.

๐Ÿ‘™

Bring a Swimsuit & Towel

Swimming in the glowing water is the highlight of the trip. Bring a swimsuit, towel, and dry clothes to change into afterward.

๐ŸฆŸ

Insect Repellent

The lagoon area can have mosquitoes in the evening. Apply repellent before arriving, but avoid putting it on right before swimming to protect the organisms.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

Wear Water Shoes

Rubber-soled or water shoes are recommended. The lagoon floor can be slippery, and the boat deck gets wet.

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Leave the Camera Expectations

Phone cameras struggle to capture bioluminescence. Some tour operators have professional cameras. Focus on experiencing the moment โ€” it's unforgettable.

๐Ÿน

Arrive Early for Dinner

The on-site restaurant at Glistening Waters serves Jamaican cuisine. Arrive 1-2 hours early to enjoy a meal and cocktail before your tour departs at sunset.

โ˜€๏ธ

Best Season: November-April

Jamaica's dry season offers clearer skies and less chance of rain washing out your tour. But the lagoon glows year-round โ€” just check the forecast.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Book a Smaller Group Tour

Some budget tours pack 50-60 people on a boat. Splurging on a private or small-group tour is worth it for a more intimate, magical experience.
